Halloween Safety for Maine Coons
Halloween can be a blast for humans but for cats, it can feel like the end of the world. Doorbells ringing, strangers in masks, loud noises, flashing lights, and tempting candy everywhere can easily send even the chillest cat running for cover (or worse, out the door).
To help your majestic floof enjoy a peaceful, stress-free evening, hereโs our personal tips to Maine Coon Halloween safety. A few simple steps that can make a big difference for a fun & safe night.
Keep Them Indoors, Yes, Even If Theyโre Used to the Catio
Maine Coons are known for being curious and social, but Halloween night isnโt the time to indulge that adventurous spirit. The constant activity, strange smells, and loud sounds can easily spook your cat and send them bolting. Even if you have a secure catio or screened porch, keep your cat fully indoors for the night. People can unfortunately be “up to no good”, especially on nights that they know will be chaotic. Too often you see cats going missing from their homes, especially on holidays when the house may be a bit more busy than usual. To add to this, also be sure that all of the windows in your house are not only closed, but locked, and you may double check the screens.
Even if you have no plans on your cat going outside, you may consider a collar with ID tags. Just in case, it never hurts to be “too safe”. In addition to a collar, confirm that their microchip information is up to date. In the event that they do get outside and picked up, a collar will be the first thing someone checks. Next to that would be scanning for a microchip. If you have a Maine Coon from us, then they are already microchipped & registered. No need to worry about that.ย If you aren’t sure if your cat is microchipped, I would highly recommend having them scanned. If they are not, please have them chipped. It’s fairly inexpensive and you can also register it for free.
A single jump or loud shout could send them running into the night and with so many people out and about, itโs harder than ever to track them down quickly. Give them plenty of resources to offer the best chance of being returned in the event that they make it outside.
ย Create a Calm, Secure โSafe Roomโ
If youโre expecting trick-or-treaters or hosting a Halloween party, your Maine Coon will be happiest in aย quiet, closed-off space. For example a bedroom, office, or spare bathroom works perfectly. You can set up their own little Halloween retreat with:
- Aย litter box, be sure to place this as far away as possible from food and water
- Fresh water and a small meal or their favorite treats
- Aย soft blanket or bed, preferably something they’re familiar with
- A couple ofย familiar toys or scratchers
- A good tip that I generally use with mine, turn on a TV, calming music or white noiseย to mask outside sounds
- Optional: aย pheromone diffuser or spray (for example, Feliway)
Lock the door to prevent accidental openings! Sounds ridiculous but, accidents happen. You do not want the door opened and your cat making the dash outside. Hang a small signย to let guests know your cat is inside:

Guard the Door, Itโs the #1 Escape Risk
Between trick-or-treaters and guests arriving, doors open and close constantly. Thatโs a huge temptation (and danger) for a curious Maine Coon. A few simple habits can save you a panic-filled night:
- Consider appointing a “door watcher” if you are planning to hand out candy. Although, a safer and less stressful alternative would be creating a safe room.
- Step outside to greet trick-or-treaters instead of letting them repeatedly approach the door.
- Add a baby gate or folding screen a few feet inside of the doorway as a backup barrier.
Keep Candy Completely Out of Reach
Candy might smell good to your cat but itโs a Halloween hazard. Chocolate,ย raisins,ย xylitol (in sugar-free treats), and evenย wrappers can cause serious illness or worse. Cats donโt process sugar and chemicals the way we do, so even small amounts can be toxic. Cats are also extremely curious, they do not need to try out the wrapping paper to see if it’s tasty. Tips for this would be to keep all of the candy off of surfaces that your cat frequents, like counters or tables. Store candy in a sealed container instead of bowls. Empty candy wrappers should go into a closed trash can right away.
Decorate with Care
Halloween decorations are fun for you but full of curiosity triggers for cats. Keep your cat safe by using battery powered candles instead of open flames. Keep your cords, lights, and tinsel out of their paw reach. Avoid using fake spiderwebs or dangling decorations that they may be tempted to chew. Secure wobbly decor that your cat might be tempted to whack. A good rule of thumb when it comes to cats vs decor: if it moves, glows, or dangles, assume your Maine Coon will investigate it.

ย Consider Skipping the Costume Stress
Maine Coons are naturally stunning. While it might be tempting to snap a photo of your cat in a tiny pumpkin costume, most cats donโt really enjoy wearing clothes, and Halloween is already overstimulating enough. If you want a festive look without the chaos, consider using a festive bandana,”bib”, or collar. Your Maine Coon will thank you for skipping the costume drama.
ย After the Last Trick-or-Treater
When the night winds down, be sure to sweep up any stray candy, wrappers, or small decorations. Turn off any extra noise or bright lights that may of been on. Open your cat’s safe room door and let them explore again. Perhaps offer them a treat or playtime to help them relax if needed. A calm post-Halloween routine helps your Maine Coon reset after an eventful evening.
