Why Wet Food is Essential in a Maine Coon’s Diet

As we know, Maine Coons are known for their majestic size, luxurious coats, and “gentle giant” personalities. Though this regal-ness does not come without proper care and diet. One of the most overlooked yet critical components of feline nutrition is hydration. Did you know that most of a cat’s water intake comes from their food? A diet for your cat that is rich in high moisture food is not a treat, it is a life saver and is essential.

Why Hydration Matters for Maine Coons

Hydration is key for maintaining a healthy, happy life! It helps to maintain kidney health, supports healthy urinary tract function, and promotes overall wellness. Unlike dogs, cats have a naturally low thirst drive. In the wild, cats get most of their water intake from prey. That means dry kibble, which only contains about 10% moisture, is not enough to meet their hydration needs.

Maine Coons specifically due to their size and potential predispositions, are especially susceptible to kidney issues. Keeping your Maine Coon hydrated with a wet food diet that typically contains 70-80% moisture can significantly reduce their likelihood of developing CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease), one of the leading causes of death in cats.

Making the Connection, Kidney Disease & Diet

Unfortunately chronic kidney disease is insidious and progressive. It affects an estimated 1 in 3 cats over the age of 10, although it can develop in much younger cats. By the time that you’ve started to notice symptoms in your cat, the damage has generally already started to occur. However, prevention starts at their food bowl.

A species-appropriate diet that mimics the natural moisture content of a catโ€™s ancestral preyย  is the best defense. High-protein, low-carb, and moisture-rich wet food can help flush toxins from the kidneys, dilute urine to prevent crystal formation, and support metabolic health.

Key Benefits of Wet Food for Maine Coons:

  • Hydration Support: Replaces the moisture your cat doesnโ€™t drink. You can even add extra water in their wet food.
  • Kidney Health: Less strain on the kidneys compared to dry food.
  • Weight Management: High-protein content helps maintain lean muscle. By eliminating most of the carbs, your cat will be more lean and muscular. Dry food tends to cause cats to be overweight.
  • Palatability: Most cats find wet food more appealing. Especially in cats that may have oral health issues.
  • Dental Benefit: Prevent plaque buildup with a balanced dental care routine. *Unlike most say, dry food does not actually clean teeth. You can brush their teeth at home.*

Wet Food is not Optional

Many cat owners mistakenly believe wet food is a luxury or supplemental treat. In reality, a diet based solely on wet food is species-appropriate, nutritionally complete, and healthy for Maine Coons and all domestic cats. If you cannot provide a diet based on wet food alone for your cat, consider adding it to their meals 2x or more a day.

Look for wet food brands that meet the following standards:

  • Labeled โ€œComplete and Balancedโ€ by AAFCO
  • Contains real meat or fish as the first ingredient, use fish in moderation.
  • Free of fillers, artificial colors, or unnecessary carbohydrates
  • Limited or no added grains or by-products
  • Do not fall for vegan or plant based cat food!

Tips for Transitioning to a Wet Food Diet

  • Go Slow: Mix wet food with current dry food and gradually increase the ratio. This may take a few weeks, be patient with your cat. You may add some fun freeze dried toppers to intrigue them. You can also add a small sprinkle of nutritional yeast.
  • Stay Consistent: Serve at the same times daily to build routine. In the beginning, try to keep the meals fairly similar. Sometimes cats can get confused with sudden changes.
  • Use Warming: Slightly warm the food to enhance aroma. You can do this by warming the food itself or by adding a warm liquid like broth or water.
  • Offer Variety: Rotate proteins to prevent boredom and ensure nutrient diversity. We personally like to keep a variety of different brands and proteins, as well as different textures.

Protect Their Health While You Can

Donโ€™t wait for signs of kidney trouble or other health issues to take action. Preventative care through proper nutrition is the best way to help ensure that your Maine Coon gets the chance to live a long, healthy life. Feeding wet food isnโ€™t just a preference, itโ€™s a proactive strategy rooted in science and aligned with your catโ€™s biology.

By prioritizing hydration through a wet food diet, youโ€™re not just feeding your Maine Coon, youโ€™re honoring their nature and safeguarding their future.
